This creative DIY project is a blast for kids and allows them to craft love-filled designs that come to life with every scratch. Did you ever play with an Etch A Sketch as a kid? I did! My daughter was recently gifted an Etch A Sketch, bringing back so many memories of my childhood. I would spend hours trying to create the perfect picture, and it was a challenging task with those two knobs to turn!
This iconic toy is the inspiration for the Valentine Scratch-Off DIY art project. I've created a template that looks just like the Etch A Sketch toy, and when you follow my detailed steps in creating scratch paint, you will have your very own scratch-off. Let creativity flow as you paint and scratch away, creating love-inspired designs or even uncovering secret messages.
Materials You'll Need To Make Valentine Scratch Off DIY:
8.5x11 White Cardstock Paper
Markers (assorted colors)
Self-Seal Laminating Sheets
Black or Gray Acrylic paint
Dish soap
Foam paintbrush
Craft stick or toothpick

Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Download & Print Your Valentine Scratch Off Template
Start by downloading our Valentine Scratch Off template that is found at the bottom of the article. This download is FREE for all members. Print on 8.5x11 white cardstock paper.
Step 2: Color With Markers
Color the entire white rectangle with markers. You can create patterns such as stripes or a chevron. Add hearts or any other creative elements. Let the creativity flow!
Pro Tip for Coloring: Choosing the right color palette is essential. Opt for Valentine hues like red, pink and purple for a cozy feel. These colors symbolize warmth, affection, and the spirit of love, making them perfect for expressing heartfelt sentiments through art.
Step 4: Apply Laminating Sheet
For this project, I recommend using self-laminating sheets. Cut the sheet down to 4x6 inches and carefully lay it over the colored area, ensuring it covers the entire surface.
Step 5: Cut
With precision, cut out the Etch A Sketch along the edges, following the outline.
Step 6: Mix The Paint
Mix black or silver 1/4 cup acrylic paint with 1/8 cup dish soap in a small cup. This mixture will serve as the black layer over the colored markers. .
Why does mix dish soap with acrylic paint?
Mixing acrylic paint with dish soap to create scratch-off paint works due to the combination of the paint's pigments and the soap's properties. Here's a breakdown of how it works:
Acrylic paint contains pigments that provide color. When mixed with dish soap, these pigments become suspended in a medium that can be easily scratched off when dry.
The addition of dish soap makes the paint mixture easy to apply. It can be brushed or spread onto paper smoothly, creating a consistent layer that dries with a scratch-off characteristic.
To create your scratch-off paint, you can experiment with different ratios of acrylic paint and dish soap. A common recipe involves mixing two parts acrylic paint with one part dish soap. Adjustments can be made based on the desired consistency and scratchability.
When the paint dries, it forms a thin film on the paper that can be scratched away, revealing the underlying colors. This DIY scratch-off paint is a fun and creative way to make hidden designs, messages, or surprises in your artwork.
Step 7: Apply the Paint Mixture
Using a small foam paintbrush, evenly apply the paint/soap mixture over the entire colored surface. Ensure complete coverage, allowing the colors to hide beneath the black layer.
I've experimented with different types of paintbrushes, and the inexpensive foam paintbrushes worked best for this project. I found that mixing the paint with dish soap made it somewhat fragile, and the foam brush proved to be gentle while applying the paint evenly.
Step 8: Let it Dry
Allow the paint to dry completely. The waiting time can be the perfect opportunity to brainstorm spooky designs for scratching.
Step 9: Scratch Away the Magic
Once the paint is dry, provide the young artists with a craft stick, toothpick, or any sharp-edged tool to carefully scratch away the paint, unveiling the vibrant colors beneath. Encourage them to unleash their creativity by crafting Valentine designs and patterns.
Allow the kids to experiment with various scratching techniques to achieve different effects. Feel free to introduce different tools for scratching, and let them compare the results to discover their preferred method.
Display Your Heartfelt Masterpieces. Once the scratching is complete, delicately wipe off any excess paint residue. These Valentine scratch art pieces are now ready to be proudly displayed around the house, adding a touch of love-inspired spirit to the season.
