How To Draw A Bat

Example of how to get started on drawing the bat.

Step 1: Start by drawing a circle. Here’s a helpful tip: grab a cup or any circular object, place it upside down on your paper, and trace around it to get a perfectly round circle for the bat’s head.

Step 2: Next, draw the outline of the bat’s wings on each side of the circle. You can make them wide and pointy to give your bat that classic flying shape!

Step 3: Now, add some details to the wings. You can draw lines within the wings to represent the bones or patterns to make them unique.

Step 4: Draw the ears by adding two triangle shapes at the top of the circle. Bats have pointy ears, so make sure they look sharp and spooky!

Step 5: It’s time to draw the eyes. Draw two large ovals right below the ears. Then, inside each oval, draw a big circle on the top right corner and a smaller circle in the bottom left.

Step 6: Fill in the rest of the ovals with black, leaving the circles you drew earlier white. This will give the eyes a shiny, glowing look.

Step 7: For the mouth, draw a curved line just below the eyes to give your bat a smile (or a spooky grin if you prefer!).

Step 8: Draw two small triangles extending downward from the mouth—these will be the bat’s fangs.

Step 9: Add another curved line beneath the first one, making it a bit deeper to form the lower lip of the bat’s mouth.

Step 10: Now, it’s time to color in your bat! Feel free to make it a dark, eerie black or add pops of color. For an extra Halloween touch, you can color a bit of red near the fangs to make your bat look even creepier.

Here is an example of two different bats drawn by my daughters (ages 5 & 7). Drawing with them is always a magical experience, especially when we tackle fun projects like how to draw a bat! Their enthusiasm shines through every time, and they love adding their personal touch to the bat designs, from creative color choices to unique details that make the artwork their own.

When drawing with my kids, I make it a point to keep the atmosphere relaxed and encouraging. Complimenting their efforts, even if their lines don’t match perfectly or their colors are a bit wild, boosts their confidence. With projects like this, it’s about the fun, not perfection. I offer gentle guidance when needed, but I always let them take the lead, which helps them feel proud of what they create. It’s important to focus on the process and effort rather than just the outcome, and that mindset makes our time together meaningful and memorable.

So, grab some pencils and markers, and get ready for a fun drawing adventure with your kids. Whether it’s bats, Frankenstein, or candy corn mummies, you’ll have a blast drawing and making memories together!
